Tranquillity is a word that comes to mind when you enter these breathtaking limestone caves that formed from ancient corals growing in shallow waters around volcanic islands an eternity ago.
Capricorn Caves are located 23 kilometres north of Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. Their presence has been dated back to over 400,000 years, and it’s clearly visible how time has created one of the most beautiful underground cave systems in Australia, and it’s certainly one of the Capricorn Coast’s most popular tourist attractions.
It was first discovered in the 1880’s by a Norwegian migrant John Olsen, and is still one of the largest privately owned caves systems in Australia.
One of the longest-running tourist attractions in Queensland, the Capricorn Caves offer more than just a visual experience. Abseiling, rock climbing, fossicking and animal viewing can be experienced at the 33 hectare property.
An adventure course features a climbing wall and rope obstacle. The complex contains a geo-discovery building which is used for school education programs in biology, geology and environmental studies. A range of accommodation facilities are also available to visitors, including couples retreat, family, and adventure getaway packages.
For those after more than a quiet getaway, you can explore the caves, tunnels and shafts the adventurous way, squeezing through Fat Man’s Misery and taking the Commando Crawl, and enjoy a rewarding finish, climbing to the surface ridge for panoramic views and cool breezes.
The caves offer a very popular option for weddings, and they host many other events which include Underground Opera, conferences and the Summer Solstice Light Spectacle. The facilities at Capricorn Caves include an exciting range of ecotourism experiences, bars, restaurants, bush walking, barbecue areas, a visitor centre, and have leisurely wheelchair accessible tours.
